Naval Air Watch Over Islands Menaced By Reds

(11 a.m.) HONG KONG, July 24. Merchant ships passing through Formosa Strait en route to Hong Kong reported today that the United States Seventh Fleet observation planes are keeping a close watch on the Chinese Nationalist-held Quemoy Island which is under threat of invasion by the Chinese Communists. Merchant crews reported that continuous flights of American Navy planes were overhead but said theycould see no indication of large-scale military operations either on the part of the Nationalists or Communists.

Nationalist intelligence officers In Taipeh, however, stated that four Chinese Communist armies had converged on the Fukien coast opposite Formosa. The Nationalist military spokesman said that Communist amphibious assault against islands in Formosa Strait was expected soon.
