FOURSOMES MEDAL ROUND AT AWAPUNI:
WEEK-END GOLF
Almost perfect conditions prevailed on Saturday at the Awapuni links, and a majority of members of the P.B. Golf Club who participated in a foursomes medal round set out with the determination to make it a red-letter day, Trouble dogged most of the pairs, howver, and the average of scoring was not particularly good. The best net score was returned by H. Swann and J. Atkins, on a combined handicap of 10 strokes, their card showing a gross of 86 and a net of 76. W. Burt and R. Muir, low-handicap men who received three strokes, grossed 80 and took second place in the competition. on the count-back from W. J. and W. W. Langlands (11), who also scored a net 77. Other leading cards were those of H. D. Chrisp and M. W. Howe (8), 78; E. E. Jenkinson and A. K. Russell (8), 82; A. N. Williams and R. G. Clare (113, 83; A. J. Humphrey and R. Dudficld (7). 83; I. W. Tyerman and J. Solvander (13), 84; and P. Brookes and F. Gordon (5), 84.
Yesterday’s medal round competition was won by W. J. Langlands, who qualified for a further reduction in handicap by returning a net 69 off a handicap mark of 19. D. Martin (13) registered a net 70, and F. Fenwick, scratch man, returned a par 73. Others who did well yesterday were J. Solvander (20), 74, A. N. Williams (10), 76, and I. D. Bramwcll (5). 76.
The remaining semi-final match in the four-ball tournament commenced on June 10 was played at the week-end, this match having been delayed by a variety of causes. A. W. Floy -end D. Hardwick defeated J. Atkins and T. A. N. Corson, one up, after a close fight over the whole distance. In the final Hoy and Hardwick will meet R. B. Sinclair and J. T. Dodgshun. Championship Qualifying Round
During the coming week-end the first qualifying round in the club championship tournament will be played. Second and third rounds for qualifiers will be played on the following week-end, and the aggregate gross scores over the three rounds will decide the Burke Cup competition for the season. Several trophies arc available for handicap play among members not qualified to take part in the championship series, which will commence in earnest on August 19. Prospective participants have learned with interest that the visiting professional, John Watt, is to be available for coaching sessions during the week.
