Wanderers Triumph Over Eastern Union In Saturday’s Soccer

By “Half-Back.”

The general standard of play P.B. Football Association’s competitions at the Childers Road Reserve on baunday was good. Results: — ...Senior.—Wanderers 2 v. Eastern Union nil; Thistle 3 v. Rangers 1. Juniors.—Rovers 1 v. Wanderers nil, Rangers 3 v Thistle 2. . From the start of the WanderersEastern Union game fast football was seen. The teams were very evenly matched. , , . Wanderers were at the top of their form and the finish to their attacks was good. Neilson, well backed by M. Jury, was prominent in the Wanderers foiward line, while D. Roe was not sure of his hands in the goal. There was no score at half-time. . , , At the change-over Wanderers forced the game into their opponents half, but the Union defenders were hard to pass and usually managed to turn the v\ anderers forwards away. Union were caught out of position when a pass from Bridge, on the Wanderers’ right wing, enabled R. Neilson to shoot into the top of the Union net. Wanderers put their best into the next attacks, but Eastern Union hung on grimly, occasionally making swift dangerous raids on the Wanderers' goal. The speed of play began to lag about halfway through tho second half, and several passes were wide of their mark. A few minutes from time M. Jury secured another goal, putting Wanderers in the lead by two goals to nil, which was the final score. The referee was Mr C. Booth. A. Easton Scores Rangers kicked off against Thistle, but they failed to make any use o£ the advantage and were pressed back on the defensive almost immediately. The Thistle forwards worked the ball well and W. Finlay, in the Rangers’ goal, had plenty of opportunities of proving his worth. He stopped a barrage of shots, but was eventually beaten by a nice kick from A. Easton. Rangers launched a vigorous attack from the kick-off and H. ■ McCallum soon equalised when he netted the ball past F. Capes in the Thistle goal. Thistle’s retaliation was swift and nearly effective, but Rangers covered well and managed to keep them out until half-time.

At the change-over Thistle soon had the ball in their opponents’ penalty area. Rangers were unable to settle down and the defence was being bustled too much for safety. A strong cross-wind added to their worries and it was not long before A. McLean put Thistle one goal in the lead with a shot which Finlay could not hold. Rangers returned the ball to the middle of the field after the kick-off and forced the ball into their opponents’ half more than before.

Thistle collected another goal when J. Crawford netted the ball. There was no further score and the final result left Thistle the victors by three goals to one. Mr. H. Jamieson was the referee. JUNIOR GAMES

Thistle juniors took a two-goal lead over Rangers in the first half when E. Hickman broke through twice to score. Shortly before the whistle, R. Stone halved the lead with a shot which dropped under the bar. In the second half H. Cudd equalised, and eight or nine minutes before time T. Kirk broke through on his own and put Rangers one in the lead. The referee was Mr. B. Fletcher.

When R. Sharpe made an opening in the Wanderers’ defence it enabled Merritt to score for Rovers. They held the one-goal lead until the end of the game, although Wanderers made repeated efforts to equalise. The referee was Mr. R. Murray.
