MOST DISTANT STAR
NEW YORK, June 23,
An exploding star whose radiance took 50,000,000 light years to reach the earth has been discovered. It is further away than any yet reported. The star was seen through the 2001 n. telescope at the Mt. Palomar Observa tor.v. California. The discovery was announced today at a meeting of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. The star was found in the Coma cluster, which is similar to the Milky Way.
The society also announced the finding of the smallest galaxy known. It is about 9000 million-million miles wide This stellar system was located with another “midget” galaxy in the constellation of Leo.
Light travels at the speed of about 186,000 miles a second.
