Canada Is Not Dissatisfied With Status
OTTAWA, May 2. The Prime Minister, Mr. Louis .St. Laurent, told the House of Commons today he knew of no justification for any statement that Canada was dissatisfied with her position in the British Commonwealth.
He thought the reference by the South African Prime Minister, Dr. Malan, to alleged Canadian dissatisfaction with the King’s title must be based on the resolution considered in the Canadian House of Commons about two years ago. It was pointed out then that the title was no longer in strict accord with the constitutional facts of the Commonwealth. No dissatisfaction had been manifested.
Answering questions, Mr. St. Laurent recalled that the House of Commons some time ago agreed to drop the title ■Emperor from the King’s title because of tlie change in the status of India, Pakistan and Ceylon.
