BURIED SPANISH GALLEON FOUND OFF SCOTLAND

LONDON, March 31. Pieces of eight, ducats, gold plate and gems believed to be worth £30,000,000 may be recovered from the Spanish armada treasure galleon that has lain hidden for 350 years in the seabed under Tobermory Bay in the western isles of Scotland.

Naval clivers have located the ship—the Duque de Florencia —buried in 15ft. of mud and sand. They hope to dig their way in by April 3 to check the old story that the treasure lies there. The Duque de Florencia fled to Tobermory Bay after Sir Francis Drake's defeat of the armada. Trouble flared up between the Spaniards and the local chieftains and the galleon was blown up and sunk in the bay. Naval divers have been searching for nearly a month under a contract between the Admiralty and the Duke of Argyll who holds the salvage rights for Tobermory Bay and is entitled to any treasure recovered. The Duke is paying the cost of the operation.
