GAOL AND FINE ON BLENHEIM CHARGES OF ILLICIT DISTILLATION
(P.A.) BLENHEIM, March 31. After a hearing extending over several days a jury in the Supreme Court brought in a verdict of guilty against Frederick Spencer, salesman, of Tinline on charges of being in possession _of apparatus suitable for the distillation of spirits and of attempting to sell spirits on which duty had not been paid. Spencer was sentenced by Mr. Justice Northcroft to gaol with hard labour for 13 months on the first charge and to four months on the second, the sentences to be concurrent.
George Edward Clemens, pensioner, of Cherry Bay, Queen Charlotte Sound, was round guilty on a charge of being in possession of apparatus suitable for distillation and was fined £SO and ordered to pay £3l, half the costs of the prosecution. Clemens was found not guilty on a charge of attempting to selL uncustomed spirits.
