Brigade Called To Power-House

A call from the alarm box on the corner of Gladstone Road and Carnarvon Street at 7.38 p.m. on Wednesday brought out one of the Gisborne Fire Brigade’s engines, but its services were not required. The alarm had been sounded by some person who had noticed a bright glow above the P.B. Electric-Power Eoard’s power-house. This, it was found, was a fairly common occurrence caused by spontaneous combustion in a chimney. The result was a brief spectacular flame which reached some height above the chimney-top but was speedily extinguished by workers at the power-house.
