’lhe Matson Line may recommence i(n Pacific steamship service between the United States and New Zealand at the end of this year jr early in Ihsl, said Mr. R. M. Firth, assistant general manager of the New Zealand Tourist Department, in a luncheon address ill Wellington yesterday to the Y.M.C.A, Optimists Club. Mr. Firth said a high Matson Line official had given him this information when he was visiting San Francisco in November last. The Aorangi is at present the only vessel linking New Zealand with North America on a regular service. •
Five months’ work of converting an empty hull into a modern, though small, coastal vessel was tested yesterday when the Paroto left Shelly Bay, Wellington, for trials. Owned by the Coilingwood Shipping Company, the Paroto is to run between Wellington and Nelson carrying general cargo. With two 114 h.p. Diesel engines, she is expected to have a maximum speed of eight knots. Sha will be capable of carrying 110 tons deadweight, or 130 tons of general cargo.
