MARIST WIN SENIOR A CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP WITH R. 0.8. AND UNITED EQUAL AS RUNNERS-UP
Marist hit die winners of i he Poverty Day Cricket Association's Senior A competition in Gisborne for (he 1919-50 season. In (lie tiiia! series of matches concluded at (ho Oval on Saturday they defeated Rugby Old Boys, champions of the past three years, by 72 runs on the first innings. One point ahead of ?{.<) c. on (he championship ladder before She match. Marist needed only a tie on the first innings to win the competition. By scoring an outright win over H.S'O.B. on Saturday United share the rimners-uo position with R. 0.8. The Marist-R.0.8. "final” was the most exciting game in the Senior A grade this season. Because of a delay i:i starting on the first day. it was mutually agreed among the captains to p!av 12 minutes of extra time on Sat urdu v. Set the task of scoring 153 runs for a win in 1)7 minutes, and this on a crumblin-’ wicket, with the light beginning to fade. R. 0.8. played out time--but” only just. When stumps were drawn at (i. 12 one wicket lemained to fall, but the side had failed by 40 runs to register a win. Marist thus won on the first strike. R. 0.8.. who on the previous Saturday had lost 5-51 at the close of play, managing a tally of wily 93. Scholium Turns Tide The game took a dramatic turn when Marist’had their turn at the creases for their second knock. At one stage Ihe eventual winners had lost seven wickets for only 26 runs. Then the Marist captain. C. Scholium played an unbeaten -12. in which he lifted to ball for three sixes. He was the only bats man. excepting B. Graham (10) to reach double figures. As on the first day when he took 7-32. R. Barbour did the damage tor R. 0.8. He captured another seven wickets in the Marist second knock for 28 and was the second top scorer in R.O.B's second innings. Dour batting by the early R. 0.8. batsmen in their second trip to the "middle” did not raise the hopes of supporters, but R. Barbour began to liven proceedings with some powerful hitting, until Blane halted his progress 11. Tapping batted nothing like his best for 24. ancl S. B. Martin was not hurried to score 14, not out. In one or two cases the batsmen were responsible for getting themselves out. As in the first R. 0.8. innings, J. Blane took most wickets his analysis being 5-50 and 4-47. Dow Gets 81 P. H. Dow reached 81 before being run out in United's match against. H.S. 0.8. S. Calcott scored a bright 54 and the side tallied 253. L. Roderick, who topped the H. 5.0.8. batting in the first innings took most wickets, his spinners bringing him an average of 5-41. One short when they began the second innings, H. 5.0.8. mustered only 68 against the bowling of C. Fraser and R. Calcott. They took 5-25 and 3-1 respectively. As the result of beating R.O.R. outright United became the virtual winners of the Senior B competition, the last series but one of which was completed on Saturday. R. 0.8., 159 runs behind the United total with a nine-man team were forced to follow on, but could raise only three runs short of their previous tally S. Fields, led the R. 0.8. batsmen in the first innings with an unbeaten 54, and McGregor, who also carried his bat. was top-scorer in the second with 23. D Jones with 4-35 and 3-40 in two innings, was the most successful United bowler. Championship points are:-
