WHAKAWHITIRA SCHOOL SPORTS A GREAT SUCCESS

TIKITiKI NEWS

The Whakawhitira School sports, held in perfect weather, proved to be one of the greatest successes yet achieved in Whakawhitira for a gathering of any description. The most popular events of the day were the 100yds race for fathers and the free-for-all tug-of-war, in which not an inch of tire 20-yd. rope was visible. Sixty children shared 180 prizes, and some collected a handsome total. The obstacle races were very entertaining. The relay race was won by the Blue team, and the boys’ tug-of-war by Billy Babbington’s team, in a close tussle with Boy-boy Apatu's team from the valley. The women’s committee, led by Mcsdames P. Babbington, T. Pohe, R. Walker and K. Waihi was responsible for the excellent lunch, while Mr. I*. Babbington was assisted by many helpers in the preparation of the "hangi.” At the conclusion of the function Mr. 11. Mahuika, on behalf of the committee, thanked Mr .and Mrs. E. M. Prosser, who are in charge of the school, for their untiring efforts towards the success of the sports day.
