LIBERALS URGE SPLITTING UP OF BIG UNIONS

(9 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. IG. The Liberal Party’s Trade Unions’ Commission has recommended the splitting up of big unions. The commission heard evidence from 35 union and employer representatives. Its findings will be submitted to the full party for approval on January 27. The commission’s report also proposes “fearless” action countering unofficial strikes and quicker negotiation of the machinery for dealing with stoppages. The report declared: “The trade unions represent enormous concentrations of power not controlled by the State nor responsible to the public through Parliament. Such uncontrolled power might develop in a way which is not for the public good. “The time might come when the policy of one union for all workers of the country might be pursued.” The commission said it did not think it practicable to limit the size of unions by legislation. It said that unionists and the public generally would be served best by calling a halt to amalgamations, by encouraging decentralisation of organisation, and by allowing groups wanting to operate separate unions to do so without restriction.
