POSSIBLE £IOOO FINE FOR HEAVY BALES NOW REDUCED TO £5

The liability to a fine of £IOOO for offences against the regulations limiting the weight of bales of wool for sale or transport has been removed by an amendment in the New Zealand Gazette to the Board of Trade (Wool Packing) Regulations, 1948. In lieu, a penalty not over £5 on conviction by a magistrate is provided. The wool packing regulations stipulated that woolpacks should have an interior measurement of 42in. by 27in. by 27in., and that the maximum weight of a bale of wool intended for sale or transport should be 4001 b. (slipe, lambs, carbonised, scoured or wool in the fleece, whether singly or together, or with or without any other wool), and 4501 b. in any other case. Where the gross weight exceeded these maximums by 2£ per cent., an offence was deemed to be committed. The Gazette announces that Section 31 of the Board of Trade Act, 1919, under which the regulations were made, shall not apply to any offence against them. That section of the Act provides that any person concerned in an offence against a Board of Trade regulation is liable to a penalty of £IOOO, or where two or more persons are responsible, they are severally liable to a penalty of £IOOO.
