NO TAX REMISSION FOR WATER SCHEME STEEL
(P.A.) WELLINGTON. Nov. 9. The sales tax and duty on 35 miles of steel piping to be used for the Hutt River water supply scheme will cost the ratepayers about £130.000. The Rritish Petroleum Company of New Zealand, in which the Government has a controlling interest, is importing steel piling f,- ee 0 f tax. This was reported to the Wellington Citv and Suburban Water Board yesterday bv the city engineer. Mr. K. E. Luke. Though some steel piping “for industrial purposes” is being allow'd into the Dominion free of tax, the Government has so far refused to allow such a remission in the case of water scheme steel Mr. Luke added that he had been in touch with the Government departments concerned, following advice Inst week that the sales tax and duty on steel piping to be used in the Ifunuri water development extension would cost Auckland £34.000 a mile. Ho bad discovered that the British Petroleum Company was importing its steel piping free of tax.
