Unique Gathering in London: Queen Presides
LONDON, Nov. 2, In the attractive setting of the restored Elizabeth hall of the Middle Temple the Queen tonight presided as Master Treasurer of the Inn at a grand night. It is the first time in the history of the Inns of Court that a Queen has presided at a grand night dinner in the hall. Thus the Queen made history in this hall where Elizabeth saw Shakespeare’s first production of “Twelfth night” in 1601. Twenty-three fellow benchers sat with the Queen and other distinguished guests at the long high table, which was made from an oak given to the Inn by Queen Elizabeth. At other tables sat 168 barristers and students of the Middle Temple. As Master Treasurer the Queen read the traditional “grace before the meat.” After she had proposed the King’s health the Queen fulfilled the Inn’s ceremonial of drinking from a loving cup which was passed around the dais and body of the hall.
Among the guests were the Lord Chief Justice, Lord Goddard, the Prime Minister, Mr. C. R. Attlee, the Lord Mayor, Sir George Alywen, Mr. Churchill and the service chiefs.
