STERLING FUNDS RECOVER

A further slight rise of £358,695 to £42,115.897 occurred in sterling funds of the Reserve Bank during the week ended October 26. The gold reserve was increased by £8745 to £3,619,190. Advances to the State, both for marketing and other purposes, increased by more than £3,000,000. Offsetting these movements was a rise of £226,025 to £42,661,880 in the note issue and an increase of over £5,000,000 in trading bank deposits. The proportion of reserve to demand liabilities again showed a decline to 33,043 per cent., the lowest since January, 1942.
