BRANCHES TO BECOME ONE: CROP RESEARCH DIVISION FORMATION

(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 4. The merging of the agronomy division of D.S.I.R. and the wheat-breeding section of the Wheat Research Institute, both situated at Lincoln, was announced by the Minister in charge of Scientific and Industrial Research, Mr. T. 11. McCombs, yesterday. These branches of his department will become one on April 1 next year and will be known as the Crop Research Division.

Mr. McCombs stated that the time was opportune for this merger, since for many years the agronomy' division had been engaged in the production of pure nucleus seed for certification and this work had now been taken over by the Department of Agriculture. This would enable the division to devote more time to crop improvement research in which it would collaborate with the Wheat Research Institute.

The amalgamation would bring within the organisation an improvement of all field and vegetable crops and effect economies in the land equipment staff and administrative expenses. To facilitate the amalgamation, the chief executive officer of the Wheat Research Institute, Dr. O. H. Frankel, has been appointed associate director of the agronomy division.
