ADMIRAL SHERMAN NAMED AS NEW U.S. NAVY CHIEF
(10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Nov. 2. President Truman will appoint ViceAdmiral Forrest Sherman as the new Chief of Naval Operations, the White House announced yesterday. Adtniral Sherman will succeed Admiral Louis Denfeld, who was dismissed from office last week, it is re-
ported, because he opposed the armed forces unification. The White House announcement came shortly after Admiral Sherman’s arrival from Europe. He and the Navy Secretary, Mr. Francis Matthews, conferred with President Truman. Admiral Sherman has been commander of the Sixth Task Fleet in the Mediterranean. His appointment will be subject to Senate confirmation when Congress reconvenes in January.
