DEPUTY HEAD OF ENGLISH A.A. TO VISIT GISBORNE
Vice-chairman of the English Automobile Association, Sir Frank NewsonSmith, Bart., will be an overnight visitor to Gisborne tomorrow, and will leave Gisborne on Saturday morning for Te Puia Springs. He is expected here late tomorrow afternoon.
Travelling under the auspices of the automobile associations in New Zealand, Sir Frank will come to Gisborne from Hawke’s Bay with the secretary of the Hawke's Bay association, Mr. C. V. Freedman, and a member of the council, Mr, W. H. Dowling. He will be taken on to Te Puia and later to Whakatane by one of the Gisborne resident patrols, Mr. I. F. Caie.
Sir Frank, a stockbroker, has been a member of the London Stock Exchange since 1900. He was Lord Mayor of
London in 1943 and 1944, president of the London Chamber of Commerce from 194 G to 1948, governor of Sutton’s Hospital in Charterhouse, governor of Christ’s Hospital, governor of Barts Hospital, governor of Dover College, governor of Bradford College, a member of the Honorary Artillery Company since 1896, was elected to the Court of the Common Council in 1911, was deputy governor of the ward of Broad Street in 1928, Chief Commoner in 1930, a member of His Majesty's Court of Lieutenancy, City of London, 1929, master of the Worshipful Company of Turners in 1933, master of the Worshipful Company of Spectaclemakers in 1947, alderman of Farringdon within the ward 1938, sheriff of the City of London 1939, and chairman of the Government committee on business training 1945.
