Games Trials at Hamilton : Tommy Mclntyre’s Chance

Although defeated in the semi-final of his class at the New Zealand amateur boxing championship, Tommy Mclntyre, Gisborne featherweight, is to have a chance to qualify for Dominion representative honours at the Empire Games early next year. In company with Mr. E. E. Caughey. secretary of the Gisborne Boxing Association. Mclntyre left Gisborne yesterday for Hamilton, where selection trials are being conducted by the New Zealand association. Assembled at Hamilton will be a large number of the country’s leading amateurs, including all the winners of classes at the Dominion championships. Mclntyre is believed in Gisborne to have a good chance of redeeming his failure at the championship tournament a few weeks ago, when he appeared to suffer from lack of enterprise rather than from any lack of skill. A former Gisborne amateur. Tommy Turnbull, is also to attend the Hamilton selection trials as a representative of the Wellington association. Turnbull is a light-heavyweight with a great punch who has so far just failed to come up to expectations. He had a good career as a High School boxer, holding the open championship at Gisborne for two years, and did well in later ringwork until he took a knockout defeat from Roy Gilbert, a mature and experienced fighterThat defeat could have been avoided had Turnbull continued to use his reach, which had enabled him to reduce Gilbert to serious difficulties in the early part of the match. The chance of a quick finish proved too attractive to Turnbull, however, and he sacrificed his reach advantage, with the result that Gilbert promptly landed a damaging punch which changed the whole aspect of the fight. Latterly. Turnbull has been boxing occasionally’ in Wellington, where he is training for the teaching profession, and his form has been good enough to secure for him an invitation to the Games trials.
