BLACK CHIEF & WHITE WIFE BARRED IN S.A.

(N.Z.P.A.—Reuter— Copyrisht-) PRETORIA, Oct. 31. Seretse Khama, chief of the Bamangwato tribe, and his white wife, the former London typist, Ruth Williams were tonight declared prohibited immigrants by the South African Government. The Southern Rhodesian Government is likely to issue a similar ban. The Union Government's statement came on the eve of the opening of the judicial inquiry ordered by the British Government into the chieftainship of the Bamangwato tribe. The judicial commission, which opens tomorrow, will inquire whether Seretse was designated chief of the Bamangvvatos in accordance with native customs at a tribal meeting properly convened and assembled and whether he is a fit and proper person to be chief. The tribe decided to accept the chieftainship of the 27-year-old Seretse Khama in Serowe last. June. His claim was opposed by hi? uncle. Tshekedi Khama, Regent _ since 1927 because of Seretse's marriage a year ago.

Tshekedi urged the tribe not to accept the white chieftainess.
