ROUGH RIDING IN CUP: PROBE BY STEWARDS
i ' (11 a.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 2. The turf edition of the Sydney ( Morning: Herald says that while Foxzami, perfectly ridden by Feli lows, had a smooth run and was handy to the lead all through the < Melbourne Cup, other horses, including Benvolo, Vagabond, Better 4 Law, Delta, Comic Court, Sanctus, Dashing Beau and Playboy found it a fairly rough mce. ‘ Vagabond was interfered with when he was forced on to the heels of St. : v Razzle at the seven furlongs and almost went on to his nose. An inquiry has been opened by the t stewards on this and other incidents. The Sydney Daily Telegraph corresit pondent comments that Benvolo was the unlucky horse of the race and that i he may have won had he escaped inter15;] ference between the five and four furi longs. Benvolo finished very fast in 3 third place, a length and a half and a * long neck behind the leaders. He would have been second in a few more ? strides. A mile from home he was travelling comfortably in sixth place but when , Comic Court fell back slightly Benvolo r suddenly lost ground. The jockey, . Williams, said he lost more than a length and was thrown right out of his t stride. He was well back into the sraight, but made up four lengths in t the last furlong. Writing in the Daily Telegraph the *' correspondent. J. O’Brien, says that the stewards questioned eight jockeys con- ' ceming the roughly-run Cup and adjourned the inquiry until tomorrow. Foxzami’s owner, Mr. Len Robinson. i attended the 1947 yearling sales in New Zealand determined to buy a Nizami k yearling. Several Nizami progeny were offered and he fined the selection down to two —a colt from Honevwood and a ' flllv from Card Player. He bought the colt for 800gns. and named him Foxzami The fillv bought on behalf of Mr. F. W. Hughes for 1400gns., was Grev Nurse who last vear won the V.R.C. Oaks. Foxzami is the second horse bv Nizami to win the Melbourne Cup, the other being Hiraii in 1947. After yesterday’s race Mr. Robinson said: “In 1946 I picked Nizami as one of the best sires in Australasia and 1 thought I would buy him, but Mr. 1 Hughes must have had the same idea 1 because he got in before ijje. r “T intended to mate one of mv mates with Nizatrii, but Mr. Hughes does not f take outside mares. The next best thin® was to buv a Nizami yearling at f the New Zealand sales.” Foxzami has had 27 starts for seven J’ wins and eight minor placings. i His Melbourne Cup win brought his total prize money to £18,474.
