BUILDING CONTROLS
Sir. —Mr. Semple announces partly relaxing building controls the day he is due to give an election address over the air and savs that the relaxation proposals are not an electioneering stunt — just a happy coincidence. Mr. Semple knows full well that the time is overdue for removing the restrictions on house building. Last year timber production was a record. The regulations have hindered those selfreliant people who were prepared to finance and build their own homes instead of waiting for a State house at an uneconomic rental. A man with a large family will still have to apply for a permit to build a suitable house. No credit is due to the Government for doing now what it should have done months ago. When the Prime Minister makes his policy speech perhaps we will hear of further relaxations of controls. SECTION OWNER.
