NEED FOR GREATER EFFICIENCY IN N.Z. INDUSTRIES URGED

(P.A.) DUNEDIN, Nov. 2. A need for greater efficiency in industry was emphasised by speakers at the annual conference of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation which opened in Dunedin yesterday. About 100 delegates were welcomed by the acting president, Mr. D. V. Wilson, of Christchurch. New Zealand manufacturers might soon have to meet overseas competition said the president, Mr. S. Howard Hunter, in a message read to the conference. Mr. Hunter, who is visiting the United States, stated: “Full production at lower costs is the solution to our problems. Only the blind will fail to see that the living standards enjoyed by our people are dependent solely on our will to work and upon the degree of efficiency that we establish within the industries of our country.” The system of rewards in New Zealand and* the country had reached a low ebb of service, said Mr. I. Mathcson (Wellington) in seconding the annual report. Under the present system people who gave better service found that they were no better off than those who did not. The rewards of certain people had been cut back and they had found it impossible to give to the community the service they once did.
