PROBATION IN NORTH FOR ILLEGAL BETTING

(P.A.) - WHANGAREI, Nov. 1. Hugh Kennedy Sirl, stock agent, of Whangarei. was yesterday placed on probation for 12 months on charges of carrying on business of a bookmaker and entering into a bet on the result of a horse race. The evidence showed that Sirl entered into a bet with a plain clothes constable who had been sent from Auckland to detect bookmakers. A charge against Hugh Patrick Stewart of obstructing the police by warning Sirl of the identity of the constable was dismissed.
