More than 500 Auckland watersiders. nearly one-third of the union labour force, were not available for employment this morning as the result of the dismissals on the three-day penalty in the previous two days. The effects of the Auckland overtimereplacement dispute have mounted rapidlv and unionists have been penalised for refusing to work in gangs with overtime non-unionists and to replace dismissed men.
No developments occurred yesterdayin the dispute which is now a week old. The overseas ship, Huntingdon, was idle all day. Three ships were not worked last night and many vessels *were only partly manned. At yesterday morning's labour-en-gagement call discs were displayed offering work to 105 unionists available, partly to replace 382 dismissed on Mpndav night for refusing to work with non-unionists engaged for overtime on the Rangitoto. the Northumberland and the Huntingdon. They refused to lift the discs and were placed on penalty for three days.
The day, therefore, began with 387 absent on penalty. Unionists on the Union Steam Ship Company vessels refused to work in gangs completed by non union replacements and 136 men in 11 gangs were dismissed and placed on the three-dav penalty, bringing the total in port under penalty to 523.
