VARIED REASONS ADVANCED FOR DELAYING SHIPS

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 21. Lack of shed space and wharf labour were responsible for the present port congestion in Wellington, said the harbourmaster. Captain D. M. lockl, vesterday. There were enough berths 'lor another live or six ships, lie said, but whether they could be worked was another question. There were 14 overseas and 30 coastal ships berthed at the city whaiwes early in Hie afternoon. The secretary of ' the Wellington Waterside Workers’ Union, Dir. E. A. Napier, claimed that a shortage of berths and unloading facilities was causing congestion and that if the ships now idle waiting to be unloaded could be discharged union labour Avould handle them. An official of the Waterfront Industry Commission said that there was a shortage of more than 100 labourers on the Wellington waterfront yesterday. He said that four overseas ships could not be worked because no discharging berths were available. A sudden influx of overseas ships to Wellington from the United Kingdom because of the correspondingly-sudden end of the bottleneck to ships caused by the recent dock strike in Britain was the reason given by local shipping officials for the current wharf congestion.
