Hint of Stoppage in N.S.W. Mines Next Week

SYDNEY, Oct. 21. The threat of a general stoppage on the coalfields next week was mentioned to the chairman of the Central Coal Reference Board, Mr. F. Gallagher. The secretary of the Maitland mine deputies, Mr. W. N. Hindmarsh, who was claiming long-service leave for the deputies on the same terms as the leave granted to members of the Miners’ Federation, said: “The indications are that it will be another national calamity.” The dispute concerns the employment of deputies in open-cut mines. Even without such a stoppage, the position concerning coal reserves is considered grave. At present the reserve stocks held in New South Wales total 349,900 tons.

This reserve is not being increased by overtime work and 12,521 miners on the northern fields will commence their three weeks’ holidays on December 16.

It is estimated that a reserve of 600,000 tons is necessary to maintain the services.
