GISBORNE ORDER NOT AUTHORISED BY MINISTER
(P.R.) WELLINGTON. Oct. 22. “The reply is in the negative,” stated the Minister of Railways, Mr. H. Semple, who was asked by Mr. C. G. E. Marker (Opp. Hawke’s Bay) if it was with his knowledge or approval that an officer of the Railways Department recently had demanded that the proprietors of the privately-conducted office of the Government Tourist Department in Gisborne remove the notice from outside their business premises notifying the public that booking facilities were available for various transport services.
Replying to the request b$ Mr. Marker that the main highway between Gisborne and Wairoa, via Tiniroto be put into such condition during the ensuing summer as to ensure it will be usable throughout (he following winter, the Minister of Works stated that, owing to the nature of the country, this highway is specially subject to damage and blockage by slips. Substantial provision had. however, been made tliis year for maintenance and it was hoped (hat this expenditure would have the effect of keeping the road in usable condition throughout the winter.
