Major Pruning Of Trees : Committee To Inspect
The vieiv that the reserves committee should inspect trees before any major pruning activities were undertaken teas expressed at the Gisborne Borough Council’s fortnightly meeting last night. After a letter from several borough residents drawing attention to recent prunings had been read, the council decided to carry out this policy in the future. The residents considered that when major pruning was considered necessary, ratepayers in the streets concerned should be consulted. "These trees should be allowed to extend their natural beauties, and I think that every care is needed m nruning them," commented Dr. A. L. Singer. He thought the reserves committee should inspect the trees before major pruning was carried out. , , “I think the request of the residents is a reasonable one,” he said. Mr. F. Tolerton considered that the experience of the supervising gardener should be taken into account. . .
A councillor: The supervising gardener may not have been there when the trees were pruned. Supporting Dr. Singer’s suggestion, Mr. R. Morse commented that he thought the reserves committee should take this course, rather than the supervising gardener and town clerk being “shot at.” As far as the request from the residents was concerned, it was not feasible as it was unlikely that the committee would get two residents of the same opinion, he said. The town clerk, Mr. W. M. Jenkins, remarked that there had been criticism some time ago over the pruning of a borough tree that now had a fine appearance.
