TAUWHAREPARAE WIN THREE TROPHIES IN TOLAGA BAY RUGBY

By defeating Paikea by nine points to nil in the Craill Shield final on Saturday Tauwheraparae gained the distinction of annexing all three trophies in the Tolaga Bay senior Rugby competitions. the others being the Thornton. Cup and the McNeil Cup. Tauwhareparae played with only 13 men throughout, but despite this handicap, they overcame an early series of attacks by their opponents to gain control and keep up the advantage for the remainder of the game. Led by I. Hooper and 11. Shelton the Tauwhareparae forwards broke away, but with a clear run to the goal-line the latter's pass went astray and Paikea forced. Shortly after the defenders were penalised and J. Hooper goaled. Tauwhareparae 3. From a passing movement on the Paikea 23 lan James intercepted a pass and scored near the corner. J. Hooper's kick failed. A period of scrappy play ensued until James snapped up the ball in the loose and went over in the corner to score. Tanwharepaare 1), Paikea nil. Rest Players J. Hooper, James and Lambert were the best of the Tauwhareparae backs, and I. Hooper, H. Shelton, and McKinley were the pick of the forwards. For the losers Morell was outstanding in the forwards and was ably backed up by Poki. Pacnga had a gruelling time as half-back but came through with flying colours. P. Milner and Te Kani were dangerous on attack and solid in defence. Mr. S. Becdcll was the referee.
In a bright curtain-raiser match the Tolaga Bay junior representatives withstood a challenge from the Ruatoria juniors for the Rose Bowl by four tries, one converted, to ofie unconverted try. Play was mostly confined to the forwards with occasional flashes of good back play. Tolaga Bay opened their account early when Gibson scored following a dribbling rush. Shortly afterwards (he ball travelled along to the wing where it was kicked ahead for J. Smith to snap it up after a lucky bounce to score wide out. Parker converted from an awkward angle. McCulloch Scores A fine dribbling rush by the visitors ended in Keelan being tackled over the line, but McCulloch fell on the ball when it came loose to score. Tolaga Bay 8. Ruatoria 3. Gibson again scored after the forwards had engaged in a close passing bout. The final iry of the match, which was Gibson’s third, came before time when he broke through at Ruatoria’s 25 line and scored in a handy position. Parker failed to convert. Tolaga Bay 14, Ruatoria 3. Mr. Wi Pere Amaru was the referee. Following the match, which marked the termination of the season, Mr. Wi Pere Amaru, in the absence of Mr. Erl Gorringe, the president of the Tolaga Eay Sub-union, presented the following trophies won during the 1949 season:— Lockwood Cup: Tolaga Bay Senior representatives (A. M.-Lincoln, captain). Thornton Cup: Tauwhareparae (I. Hooper, captain). , McNeil Cup: Tauwhareparae (I. 'Hooper, captain). Crail! Shield: Tauwhareparae. Rose Bowl: Tolaga Bay junior representatives (Malcolm Gibson, captain). This is one of the oldest established trophies on the East Coast, having been presented by the Rev. Fitzgerald to the Waiapu sub-union for competition in 1903. Con Ward Cup: Hauiti (for the most efficient team in the senior competition) (H. Ruru, captain). McNeil Shield: For competition among primary schools, including Tolaga Bay, Annura Bay, Mangatuna and Whangara. Won by the town team, W. Nuktmuku (captain). Junior Championship Cup: Paikea.
