Peron, Gambling On Fall 0f Pound, Stops U.K. Exports

(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright.)

LONDON, Sept. 4

President Peron, of Argentina, gambling on the devaluation of sterling. has almost stopped British exports to the Argentine since the two-way pact was signed in Buenos Aires two months ago, says the Daily Express. Under the pact the Argentine agreed to boost buying in Britain to the

“highest possible level,” but President Peron has not granted one import license for British goods since July.

Backing his gamble he , has been rushing meat to Britain to build up the sterling pool and so buy British goods cheaply if the pound were cut. This is the main reason why the Food Ministry had to charter refrigerator ships for storage only.
