RUATORIA DEFEAT MATAKAOA IN REP. RUGBY MATCH

In a hard-fought senior representative Rugby match played in Ruatoria on Saturday the home team defeated Matakaoa by five points to three. Two trophies were at stake, the Parekura Pepere Gold Cup and the Haukamau Memorial Cup. There was no score in the first half, each side playing cautiously. After the interval, however, play livened up and from a scrum on the Matakaoa 25 M. Lincoln scored an easy try for Ruatoria. From a handy position. J. Takarangi converted- Matakaoa look over the attack and carried the play into i Ruatoria territory. Henry, for Matakaoa, weaved his way over to score.—Ruatoria five, Matakaoa 3. S. Dewes’ kick missed. The Matakaoa forwards continued on the attack, one player being unlucky not to have scored. Good defence for Ruatoria was shown by T. and S. Reedy and P. Hogan, while Stainton and Walker were prominent for Maiakaoa. In the last 10 minutes of play, N. Mackey, a Ruatoria forward, suffered an injury and was replaced by D- McClutchie. The referee was Mr. Don Colbert.
