DINNER PARTY Prior to the lona dance on Friday Mrs. H. D. Chrisp, Harris Street, and Mrs. W. J. Mclldowie, “Totangi,” Ngatapa, combined in inviting friends of their sons, Tony Chrisp and lan Mcllclowic to dinner at the Eon Accord. On the small tables were bowls of mixed spring flowers. Bowls of spring blossom and Iceland poppies were the other decorations in the room. Mrs. Chrisp was wearing a royal blue moire taffeta evening frock off-set with a pink and blue spray. Mrs. Mclldowie wore a floral silk evening dress patterned in cherry and white with a dark blue background. BABY SHOW A popular feature of the Gisborne Home Guard Band's exhibition week was a baby show conducted on Saturday. SOCIAL AFTERNOON Last Wednesday afternoon a party was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Derby street, for members of the Young Mothers’ Fireside Circle, and their children, whose grandmothers were guests for the afternoon. Games of all kinds were entered into with • enthusiasm by the kiddies, and a welcome interlude was provided by ice cream, cakes, and soft drinks. A delicious afternoon tea was served, after which a beautifully knitted doll's outfit, made and donated by Mrs. C. Waide, was won by small Lesley Henderson. The party concluded with the presentations to members of the committee of dainty sprays, the work of Mrs. Pearson. TWENTY-FIRST BIRTHDAY A special occasion for Miss Rea Sutcliffe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Sutcliffe, Clifford Street, was her twenty-first birthday celebration last Saturday evening when 180 friends were invited to the Oddfellows’ Hall, Mangapapa. Wearing a white embossed silk velvet dress trimmed with violet flowers and fashioned with an off-the-shoulder neckline, a fitting bodice, a full skirt inserted with frilled godets, and five strands of pearls which were a present of her aunt. Miss Rea Sutcliffe greeted the guests, assisted by her mother, who wore a black skirt with a silver lame top trimI med with silver sequins, i The guests enjoyed dancing to music provided by Mr. Lionel Neill and Mrs. Coleman. Miss Rea Sutcliffe played the extras. A delicious buffet supper was served. Mr. P. Mann proposed a toast to the ' birthday celebrant, who suitably replied, land her father presented her with the traditional key. The hall was decorated with greenery gay coloured streamers and festoons of balloons, which were released for a balloon dance. On the stage were bowls of spring flowers. YOUNG MANNEQUINS SHOW JUVENILE STYLES Frocks created by Jean Durain of California were modelled by five small girls at the Army Hall on Saturday as part of the Home Guard Band’s programme. The frocks shown, the property of Adair-Edvvards, Limited, were striking juvenile models combining original and practical ideas. Tartan was well to the fore, as were stripes and colour contrasts and attractive checks. Swim suits with the special “Matlatexing” feature were in several gay colours and designs. The small mannequins delighted the audience with the almost professional manner in which they displayed the many attractive garments, 'they were Jennifer and Margaret Scholium. GIFT PARTIES FOR SATURDAY’S BRIDE

Miss Harriet Dunstan, whose marriage to Mr. Stan Gooch took place last Saturday. was the guest of honour at several parties prior to that clay. A “linen” evening was held at the home of Mrs. Twaddle in Childers Road. The guests enjoyed dancing and games in rooms decorated with spring flowers. After supper the bridc-to-be opened numerous attractive gifts. Another enjoyable party was given by Mrs. Neill Russell, on which occasion Miss Dunstan was the recipient of gifts for her kitchen. , , i Mesdamcs Bradford. Gowlancl and Reichenbach invited friends to the former's home in Manutukc tor a “pantry afternoon. Bowls of spring flowers decorated the rooms, where games and competitions were enjoyed. GISBORNE WOMEN’S CLUB

Despite the inclement weather on Friday afternoon, the atmosphere of spring pervaded the spacious lounge when the Gisborne Women’s Club conducted another of its enjoyable social afternoons. The profusion of blooms reflected much painstaking work and selection by tiie members of the gardening circle, who were responsible for the preparation cf the lounge The president. Mrs. E. P. Widdowson, extended a warm welcome to the members and visitors.

The much-appreciated programme opened with a pianoforte solo by Mrs. D. Cowing. Mesdames Wood and Wallen and Miss M. Wallen contr'buted vocal solos, and monologues were g -eu by Miss Jennifer Nunns and Master T Ryan. Mrs. A. M. Castles was the v. mI nor of an amusing competition. Mrs. j Elliott acted as accompanist. I Ihe serving of altcrnoon tea brought to a close a most enjoyable afternoon. | lONA DANCE AT POHO-O-RAWIRI Parents of tne local pupils of lona College, Havelock North, Marie Johnstone. Nancy . Miss Lena Ruru's orchestra supplied the music for dancing, and Mr. Tom Moloney played the extras. Many novelty dances caused much hilarity. The main colour scheme for the decorations was the school colours, blue and brown. Bowls of grape hyacinths and daffodils banked the stage. Festoons ot balloons in blue and brown shades completed the decorations. On the supper table were bowls of daffodils and grape hyacinths. Mrs- Thomas was wearing a blue lace frock and a fur jacket; Mrs. W. If. Johnstone, a petunia crepe satin frock; Mrs. Ovcry, a black skirt with a black and white bodice; Mrs. McKay, black lace evening frock; Mrs. W. If. Williams, cyclamen skirt with a floral blouse; Mrs. White, black georgette and lace evening frock; Mrs. W. D. Morley, dusky pink evening dress; Mrs. McKenzie, Scotland, black georgette evening frock trimmed with silver sequins.
