Children as Pianists
Primary school children had given the best performances in the piano sections at the Auckland Competitions festival, according to the piano judge, Miss Dorohty Davies. ‘‘The nine to 12-year age group has been the best," she said. "This is the primary school age, when children haven't so many outside interests, and are able to concentrate or- their music., By the time the sixth standard is reached there are some really first-class players." After the 12 age group, other interests, like homework, secondary school activities, and sport made a difference in the amount of practice and attention resulting in fluctuation in players’ attention to detail. Miss Davies said. This fluctuation also affected the 16 to 18-year-old group. Technical problems were not mastered sufficiently. “In all groups after 12 years there was too much indiscreet pedalling and lack of dynamic understanding,’’ Miss Davies said.
