Britain's 'New Towns To Starve In'

(10 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 2. or. Laurence Stamp, Professor of Social Geography at London University, in iiis presidential address to the geography, section of the British Association at Newcastle, said that Britain seemed to be heading for “new towns to starve in." The standards for the new towns were one acre per 10 persons. Every 1000 acres taken robbed 1790 people of their share in food-producing land.

Dr. Stamp said the planning of land use might completely fail to improve British living standards. “Housing schemes conflict with food production and security needs conflict with amenity interests. Much that we are doing may well have to be undone if chaos is not to result.”
