CHEESEMAN ROAD TREES
Sir, —The town clerk's explanation of the wanton destruction of the Cheeseman road row of beautiful deciduous trees was “to improve and conserve them rather than to damage them.” Ye Gods! This was done by hacking them all down to an even 12 or 14 feet, irrespective of the size or nature of the trees. All that is left are pathetic looking stumps.
I would suggest that the borough head gardener is not a tree expert. Probably it is like the Army where we had a saying: “The Lord preserve us from the experts.” Residents of Score and Iranui
roads had better be on the alert otherwise one day without warning a gang of strong-armed men might suddenly appear and slash down their trees.
I The cutting down of trees in the ' borough is not a thing that should be , lightly considered and casually approved; but should be a matter for ! special deliberation and inspection first |bv members of the council. As Mr. Gladstone said: “It takes a wise man to plant a tree but anybody can cut one down.” TREE LOVER
