Sir, —The town clerk's explanation of the wanton destruction of the Cheeseman road row of beautiful deciduous trees was “to improve and conserve them rather than to damage them.” Ye Gods! This was done by hacking them all down to an even 12 or 14 feet, irrespective of the size or nature of the trees. All that is left are pathetic looking stumps.

roads had better be on the alert otherwise one day without warning a gang of strong-armed men might suddenly appear and slash down their trees.
