UNUSUAL MISHAP DISABLED TANKER
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 18. The tanker Sylvafield, which arrived at Wellington yesterday from Brisbane, had an. unusual mishap when en route from Singapore to Australia, A furnace collapsed when the tanker was steaming inside the Barrier Reef shortly after leaving Thursday Island last month. With, one boiler out of action the tanker was disabled and while efforts were made to effect repairs the ship drifted for almost three days. It was favoured by shallow waters and calm weather and was able to anchor safely. Twelve days were spent at Brisbane where temporary repairs were carried out. The tanker was originally to have arrived at Wellington ‘on July 23.
