Differences Between Federation Of Labour And Watersiders

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 16. Hope that the national executive of the New Zealand Waterside Workers’ Union, which meets in Wellington today, will make it possible for the Federation of Labour to resume collaboration with the union is expressed in a letter sent last week to the secretary of the union, Mr. T. Hill, by the secretary of the federation. Mr. K. McL. Baxter. The letter was sent in an effort to finalise the differences between the federation and the union and to resume normal harmonious relations between the two bodies.

In March the national executive of the Federation of Labour demanded an apology for and withdrawal of a letter sent by the national executive of the union.

After considerable discussion on the question at the annual conference of the federation in May the national president of the union, Mr. H. Barnes, stated that he was prepared to recommend to his executive that they withdraw the letter and express regret.

“Considerable time has passed since your president gave the conference that assurance and it is reasonable to assume that your national executive has now considered his recommendation," says Mr. Baxter, who added that he would be pleased to receive advice that the letter had been withdrawn and regret expressed. He had no doubt that it was the sincere desire of the waterside workers that normal relationship with the federal body be reinstated, said Mr. Baxter.

A copy of the letter was sent yesterday to all trade councils and affiliations so that they could be apprised of the position as it now stood and because the national executive of the federation felt sure that they were all concerned about the breach of relationships. The executive of the federation hoped that the national executive of the union would give consideration to the letter at its meeting this week and that its recommendations would be implemented.
