Lvttelton Centennial Celebrations
The cost (approximately £200) of fitting out the coal hulk Darra to rqake it resemble the Charlotte Jane, one of the First Four Ships, is to be met by the Lvttelton Harbour Board as its share of the cost of the centennial celebrations at Lyttelton. It is proposed to rig out one side of the Darra and keep that side to the public. In the morning the vessel would be tied up to the Gladstone Pier. The crew and the actors would board it there, and the vessel would then be taken outside by tug or launch. It would be brought up the stream and anchored as near as possible to the site of the original anchorage. The people would come down the gangplank in crinolines—“a bit of a job’’— and would be taken in a whale boat to land as near as possible to the original landing place at the fishermen’s steps. Apart from the crew. 200 men, women and children would take part in the landing.
