LABOUR PARTY TO CONTEST ROSKILL

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Aug 15. The Labour Party would definitely select an official candidate to contest Roskill in the general election, said Mr. R. F. Barter, president of the Auckland Labour Representation Committee and divisional area representative on the national executive, last night. The candidate would be selected shortly by the national executive. Mr. Barter said his statement was being made to contradict assertions that the Labour Party would not put forward a candidate for Roskill. Official branches of the party were in fuff swing and an electoral campaign committee would be set up for Roskill in the immediate future. There had already been an application to have the Three Kings branch of the party reformed and two of its former members had undertaken its reorganisation. When the Labour Party’s decision was referred to Mr. F. Langstone, M.P. for the electorate last night, he said it did not surprise him. “I have expected it.” he said. Asked if his own position in the coming election had been determined, Mr. Langstone said: “My position is like that of the birds in the air-free and open.”
