Child Fatally Burned When Fancy Dress Costume Catches Alight
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 15. A nine-year-old boy died on Saturday evening from severe burns suffered when his fancy dress costume, made of cotton wool, caught fire from a candle he was carrying. He was: Norman Terrence Delaney, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Delaney, Caverhill road, Cheviot.
Mr. and Mrs. Delaney were also burned in their efforts to put out the flames and were treated at the Cheviot Hospital.
About 6.35 p.m. the child was preparing for a fancy dress ball for which he had a Jack Frost costume. He was in a room by himself when his screams attracted his parents’ attention. The house is not equipped with electricity. The child was taken to the Cheviot Hospital by his parents and Dr. R. N. Snedden had him removed to the Christchurch Public Hospital. subsequently taken to the Burwood Hospital where he died at 9.50 p.m.
