Sutcliffe’s Triple Record In Drawn Essex Match: Tops 2011 Runs For Tour

(N.Z.P. A. —Reuter—Copyright.) (10.30 a.m.) . SOUTHEND-ON-SEA, Aug. 12. New Zealand drew with Essex today and Sutcliffe established three records durine; the match: in the first innings he made the highest score (243) for a New Zealander in England.

In the second innings he made another century, thereby becoming the first New Zealander to score two

centuries in each innings o

a match duvine; the tour.

He also became the first New Zealander to hit 2000 runs during a tour of England.

interval Cave had Dodds caught by Sutcliffe at second slip: Sutcliffe dived and held the ball. This seemed to influence the county men to put up the shutters and Cray and Vigar were dour and dull for 75 minutes when Vigar was stumped by Reid, off Burke.

With a lead of 116 over Essex on the first innings, New Zealand hit 218 for eight declared (Sutcliffe 100 not out) in the second innings. This left Essex to make 335 in three hours and 20 minutes with an optional extra half hour.

Cray Attacks Bowling

Cray now awoke and hit 22 in 10 minutes, including 14 in one over off Burke.

The county replied with 216 for four and additional time was not taken.

Then Sutcliffe took another catch, this time at mid-off from Burtt.

Mooney Injures Finger

Eve and Insole livened proceedings by adding 91 in the last hour, chiefly at the expense of Burke to whom they used their feet as well as the bat. Burke is a plucky bowler and though his spinning finger was sore he kept a steady length and was at least always hopefulOnce a draw became inevitable the New Zealand fielding slipped rather below the usual high standard. This business of playing for draws is one of the most irksome aspects of firstclass cricket, tiresome to both the players and spectataors alike. Cave ended the match by knocking Eve’s off-stump flying: but there was no point in taking an extra half hour so that the game finished tamely. NEW ZEALAND First innings 420 Second Innings. Mooney injured, a finger while batting yesterday and may not be available for the test.

The brightest feature of. this last day was undoubtedly Sutcliffe's century in two hours (11 fours). He hit freely and firmly from the start, and was entirely faultless and completely fulfilled the expectations held during his luckless period in the earlier part of the tour that he was capable of such a perforamnee. All Bowlers Flogged

All the Essex bowlers Pullinger, the Smiths, and Vigar—spelt runs to him and about the only shot he did not use was the late cut. Hadlee again batted cheerfully and, with Sutcliffe, made a stand of 109 in 80 minutes. Hadlee scored the more slowly and was 50 in 85 minutes (he came in before Sutcliffe) and was clean bowled in attempting to straight-drive Ray Smith. Sutcliffe got his first 50 in 70 minutes and his second in 50 minutes. He reached 2000 when he had hit 81. Donnelly was leg before after 10 minutes and a single. Scott was the only other batsman to make much contribution to the score. Essex batted for 10 minutes before lunch and with his first ball after the
