'Hands Off’ Hong Kong, U.S. Warms Reds
(11.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Aug. 12. The Secretary of State, Mr. Dean Acheson, today warned the Chinese Communists against attacking Hong Kong. In issuing this warning, Mr. Acheson revealed that the United States had had discussions with the British Government regarding the Hong Kong situation.
ITe said it was difficult to' answer questions regarding the extent of United States support to the British in Hong Kong, but he would say that any action by the Chinese Communists which violated the provisions of the United Nations Charter would come before the United Nations Security Council. ■ ,
The United States would support her obligations under the charter fully
Reuter’s correspondent in Hong Kong savs that with the arrival of further reinforcements aboard the trooper Georgic tomorrow, the colony’s garrison will exceed the colony’s entire nonChinese population of 17.500.
The Georgic has nearly 2000 men aboard, bringing the garrison strength to about 18,000 of the projected total of 25.000. exclusive of the navy.
New reinforcements include the main party of the Third Commando Brigade of the Royal Marines, who have been serving in the Mediterranean for the past two vears.
The light fleet carrier Ocean is also due tomorrow with the 80th Fighter Sauadron (Spitfires) which have recently seen service in Germany.
