CATHOLICS IN CZECH GAOLS MISTREATED
(11 a.m.) PRAGUE, Aug. 12. Catholics arrested in the ChurchStale war were being mistreated in Czech prisons, said a high Roman Catholic Church official today, slates the Associated Press.
Father Alois Zmazlik, private secretary of the Vatican mission to Prague, who was arrested during the first week of July, is reported to be in a Prague prison, said the official.
Fatner Zmazlik had been beaten and interrogated for long periods, it was said.
Despite diplomatic protests by the former Vatican charge d’affaires in Prague, Monsignor Gennaro Verolino, the Czech Government has refused to give anv official information about Father Zmazlik and stopped food packages reaching him, added the official. Church sources report that Dr. Antonin Mandl, secretary of the Church’s Catholic Action Society, is receiving better treatment.
