STEEL IMPORTS: BETTER SUPPLIES IN CHRISTCHURCH
Buildings valued at several million pounds are expected to be constructed in Christchurch when the shortage of steel, cement and labour are overcome.
Building constructors who gave this information said that steel and cement were still in short supply, but that the amounts available balanced reasonably well with the amount of labour available.
According to the Christchurch agents of Broken Hill Proprietary Limited, no steel is at present arriving from Australia because of the coal strike, but much better supplies of British steel are now arriving, and hundreds of tons are reported to be lying on the waterfront at Wellington. Supplies have been available from the United States, but contractors expect these will be cut because of the dollar shortage.
