STRUGGLE IN RAIN FOR P.B. TITLE TOURNEY HONOURS

WOMEN’S GOLF

Under conditions which would have tested the steadiness of the most ardent golfer, players in. the _ P.B. open women’s golf championship tournament continued in match play yesterday afternoon. Rain fell during most of the daylight hours and, despite the most elaborate protection, most of the players came in thoroughly wet through after completing their rounds.

Survivors in the championship section, after the second round, were Mesdames R. G. Robb and C. FO'Connor, Poverty Bay, and Mesdames H. Falwcll and L. Chitty, Hamilton. This morning’s semi-final matches were inter-district, with, Poverty Bay represented in both. All four semifinalists produced good form yesterday and Mrs. Robb, whose aggregate in the Qualifying rounds put her at the head of the list, gave a display which suggested that she will be hard to dispose of. Mrs. Falwell's defeat of Mrs. P. Sherratt in the second round was also a convincing evidence of the winner's ability to meet adverse conditions.

In the Awapuni Cup handicap tournament. Mrs. E. A. Smith scored a big win over Mrs. D. Pocock, and seemed likely to emerge into the final, with Miss J. Dods showing a return to form in defeating Mrs. H- Thomas. In all other sections of the fixture keen play was witnessed, despite yesterday’s conditions, and the vast improvement shown in climatic conditions this morning promised a good closing session.
