STRIKE PROSPECT NOT WELCOMED BY MASTER GROCERS
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 10. Should work cease on the Auckland waterfront some grocery supplies would be exhausted in two weeks’ time. The president of the New Zealand Federated Grocers’ Association, Mr. I. R. Wilson, gave this estimate today. Fie said that while most grocers were carrying fairly heavy stocks of winter lines there would be shortages in breakfast-foods, tea, tapioca, lentils, dried beans, coconut, nuts, cornflour, tinned fish, salt and matches. Potato stocks in Auckland were sufficent only for a week or 10 days. Mr. J. R. Don, secretary of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association, said that a strike on the waterfront would seriously affect many branches of industry, probably causing a shortening in production and staff.
