Traders Angered By Ordered Cuts In Clothes, Footwear
LONDON, Aug. 9. More than 700 angry shopkeepers, representing 250,000 retailers today passed a resolution urging all traders not to operate the Is in the £ cut in utility clothing and footwear prices until the trade organisations have been consulted by the Board of Trade. A protest meeting which was held in London was organised by the National Chamber of Ti-ade. The price cuts which were announced without consulting the trade by Mr. Harold Wilson. President of the Board of Trade, on July 28, are due to take effect in mid-September. Protests against the price cuts were also made to the Board of Trade by a delegation from the Wholesale Textile Association. A member of the delegation said afterwards: “If the board persists our members will not be able to distribute certain goods and wartime scarcities may return.” The Chamber of Trade’s resolution condemned the method to be adopted by the Government whereby prices would be reduced at the sole initial expense of the retail distributors.
