REFERENDUM DAY TRANSPORT JOB: R.S.A'S THANKS
The gratifying large majority established in this district in favour of defence training by the referendum conducted last week was the subject of comment at a meeting of the executive of the Gisborne Returned Services’ Association, hold last evening, when occasion was taken to record thanks to all Gisborne and East Coast residents who took an active part in support of the issue.
Particular mention was made of the success of the transportation system organised in Gisborne and in various centres of population throughout the district, under R.S.A. sponsorship. Mr. I. J. Quigley, convener of the transportation committee, reported the co-operation received from the various co-opted organisations had been most effective. “Right Men for the Job” The value of the transport system was undoubted, for many people who would not otherwise have voted were induced to go to the poll as a result of having cars available. He had already tendered thanks to those who had taken part in the effort, Mr. Quigley stated. The work of the R.S.A. staff and voluntary helpers who worked from the central headquarters was also referred to, and Mr. A. H. Miller, secretary, was asked to convey thanks to his assistants. "It is fair to claim that the R.S.A. as a non-political body, exercised a considerable influence in the referendum campaign,” commented the president, Mr. Gordon Jones. “The district effort indicated that the association was able in this instance, as in all its undertakings, to find the right men for Ihe job. The transportation committee scored an outstanding success.”
